About The Goatery

Tucked away on the beautiful grounds of Kiawah River, The Goatery is a working farm with a big heart and a small, happy herd. We specialize in crafting small-batch dairy products made with fresh goat’s milk—from creamy chèvre and feta to our award-winning pimento cheese—all made right here on Johns Island, South Carolina.

Our commitment to sustainability, local sourcing, and community connection is at the core of everything we do. Whether you’re tasting our cheese at a local restaurant, joining us for Goat Yoga, or visiting the farm for a hands-on experience, The Goatery offers a joyful, down-to-earth glimpse into life on the land.

Our Farmily

The Goatery at Kiawah River began as a simple dream shared by Ray and Missy Farkouh—to live closer to the land, raise animals with care, and create something meaningful (and delicious) from it all. What started with a small herd of goats quickly blossomed into a full-fledged working farm, rooted in a deep respect for nature and a commitment to sourcing and producing with integrity.

Missy, a lifelong learner with a passion for plants, has been studying plant based medicine science through Cornell University, bringing her knowledge of native flora and herbal traditions into everything from the pasture to the product line. Together, she and Ray take regenerative farming seriously—prioritizing soil health, animal welfare, and sustainable practices that support their community and the planet.

In 2025, they’ll be expanding their farm’s offerings with the launch of Magnolia & Moss, a sister company devoted to beautifully crafted bath, body, and home goods. Inspired by the farm’s surroundings and made with natural, locally sourced ingredients (often grown or foraged right on the property), these products reflect the same care and craftsmanship found in every bite of cheese or sip of milk.

The Goatery isn’t just a farm—it’s a way of life. And Ray and Missy are proud to share it with anyone who values good food, happy animals, and a little dirt under their nails.

Farm FAQ's

Do I need an appointment to visit?

Yes—all visits to The Goatery are by appointment only. This helps us keep things running smoothly and ensures a safe, enjoyable experience for both guests and animals. Be sure to check our event offerings, contact us, or click here to schedule your visit!

What should I wear when visiting the farm?

Farm fashion is all about comfort and practicality! We recommend wearing closed-toe shoes (preferably something you don’t mind getting a little muddy), weather-appropriate clothing, and sunscreen or a hat for sunny days. Bug spray isn’t a bad idea either—this is the great outdoors, after all.

Can I volunteer at the farm?

Yes, we love welcoming extra hands (age 16+) to help care for our animals and grounds. Whether you're looking to learn more about farm life or just want to spend time with some friendly goats, we’d love to have you! Visit our Volunteer Page to learn more and fill out the volunteer form.
